Let's Talk About...

The blogging/YouTube community. I have been reading blogs about fashion and makeup for years now, but it only used to be an occasional interest, if I remembered I would read the blogs I loved but it wasn't a priority. Then last year I got into watching the beauty people on YouTube, at first it was just in times of need; when I wanted to know how to do a particular makeup look etc. Nowadays it's the only thing I do when I'm near a computer.

It needs to stop.

This blog reading/YouTube viewing has made me want things that I would never have dreamed of wanting before, things that I cannot afford at all, things that I don't need. I was perfectly happy before, admittedly still buying things I didn't need, just wandering around superdrug/boots and picking things up that caught my eye. There was a time when a £27 shop in Boots was a shock, now it's the norm. I don't like it.

So I am going to try and ween myself off, stop watching YouTube, stop reading blogs, and just have fun shopping around for new products, not just hunting for things that so and so has recommended. I will still blog about the things that I have and love, and the new things that I come across but I want to come across them myself. The beauty community has stolen my willpower and replaced it with consumerism.

Any thoughts?

  2. Oh god i so agree! I bought a mac quad, for £25, WHY? i ask myself the colours are hideous, however i dont know whether this was an impulse buy or a direct relation to a blog post i had read.

I've come to realisation that i don't need everything any anything i see, sure i would love to splash the cash but lets be reasonable. Most of the time when i see these churned out press releases i dont bother reading them anyway.

Although this is slightly ironic as my blog is one big topshop lust list haha but i know when to buy something i like for myself not because it was just the trend. I never did that in school/college/uni so why start now?

woah sorry for the rambles, but great post! i throughly agree! xxxx

  3. I totally agree, I would have still loved makeup regardless of the YouTube/Blogging community, however I would have just stuck to drugstore makeup!

Now I've become obsessed with all kinds of overpriced "high end" brands, but it just lays in drawers full over makeup never to be used up.

It seems like so many Blogs/YTs advertise how amazing these products are and it really draws you in, but the reality is, a lipstick is a lipstick & you're never going to find something that does everything.

Excuse the rant, I just agree very much. :)

  4. I agree! reading beauty blogs has definitely got me thinking about products I didn't even know about, and reading fashion blogs has me daydreaming about buying more clothes. But of course we all have different budgets so what some people can afford, I can't. It is all consumerism! A valid point, thanks for brining it up :) x

  5. @Vikki - I nearly got caught up in the NAKED palette craze too - I don't even like neutrals!

@Sarah - I totally agree about trend following, I never used to do it either, in fact I used to pride myself on it.

@Vintage - Rants are always welcome here :)

@Rachelous - It is all consumerism, I need to remember to stick to my budget!
