MUA vs MAC: Navy Smoky Eye

I don't actually like the term 'Smoky eye' I'd rather smudgy but that doesn't have the same ring to it really does it?

Back to the point. I like navy. I really like navy eyeshadow. This is a post comparing a MAC eyeshadow which cost £9.50 or something ridiculous like that with an MUA shadow that cost £1. In the price war there is no contest but will the quality be the same?

The eye shadow's in question?

MUA Shade 10 - Pearl and MAC Contrast

I noticed that these two eye shadows were very similar when I was scouring my eye shadow collection in order to create last week's Harry Potter themed looks and thought I'd see how similar they actually were by creating this look:

I used the MAC shadow on one eye and the MUA shadow on the other.

As you can see the shades are very similar when they are on the eyes, hardly any difference between the two!

MUA Shade 10 - Pearl

This eye shadow is so creamy and pigmented, you hardly have to use any of it to get a good amount of colour on your eyes. It is a navy but a metallic blackened navy with teeny tiny blue sparkles in it, so deep for a £1 eye shadow! It almost feels buttery when you swatch it, which makes it incredibly easy to work with. Unfortunately this means that the fallout is immense (you can see this in the above images), but this isn't a problem to clean up really.

MAC Contrast Eye Shadow

Contrast is a darker more satin look eyeshadow, it is not very metallic but has a definite sheen to it. The colour is a traditional navy shade but a little bit blacker, it also has teeny tiny shimmers and glitters in it. This shadow is a little harder to work with than the MUA one but does give a nice dark look if you persevere! This is probably because it's less metallic and therefore harder to blend. I do love the effect this shadow gives though but then I love all dark shadows and am not really a fan of metallics.

Swatches of the shadows together

When swatched without a base the shadows are pretty much identical, the MUA one having slightly more of a sheen to it and the MAC not having as much pigment. Over a black base you can really see the differences, MAC is on the left and you can see that it's not as metallic as the MUA shadow, you can also see that it is more of a true navy colour.

The Winner

For me I prefer the MAC Contrast but only because it is less metallic. The shadows are very similar and you only really need one of them. I'd go for MUA Shade 10 on price and pigmentation, it is an excellent eye shadow and very easy to work with.

Have you tried MUA's eyeshadows?
What did you think?
