Wedding Wednesday: The Engagement Party

Engagement Tea Party – Saturday 19th September 2015 Last Saturday we held our engagement party at our house, we spent the day with around ...

Holiday Hotlist

Last week I was challenged by Most Wanted – the lifestyle magazine from www.vouchercodes.co.uk to come up with my summer essentials, on a budget. The budget was £70 to get everything you need for the warmer weather, quite a challenge. As I was being challenged by Voucher Codes I thought I would check out the website to see if there were any deals going on that might help in my hunt for my summer saviours. I was pleased to find that The Body Shop had a pretty epic discount available over the Bank Holiday weekend (£25 off a spend of £50) and that’s where I get my staple summer skincare and body care. I was also pleased to see that Boots were running a special points event instore, 10 points per £1 instead of the usual 4 and Superdrug were offering 30% off orders of £30 or more online. I had all my bases covered, I’m a high street girl at heart. I also always check out Poundland and Savers when I’m in town as they often have products I use for much cheaper than in other shops. Another tip is to check out the clearance sections in shops, as it’s almost the end of summer a lot of summery products have made their way to those shelves – I got a proper bargain using this tip.

I’ve divided my summer must-haves into three sections: Face, Body and Hair. I divided the budget between them, £25 each for face and body and then £20 for hair as I found it much easier to stay within the budget this way. How do we think I did?

In the warmer weather my face becomes an oil slick, I get such an oily chin and forehead it’s ridiculous! To combat this I like to use a mattifying moisturiser, I’ve used expensive ones (La Roche Posay – Effaclar Mat) and I’ve used cheap ones (Garnier Pure Shine Control) but my favourite is The Body Shop’s Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream – it smells nice, it does a great job at mattifying the skin and it’s not too harsh. I always buy the Seaweed Skincare Kit for summer as it costs £10 and I get everything my skin needs, a cleanser, toner, moisturiser and night treatment, the products are 15ml each and you don’t need to use a lot for them to be effective. Using the discount on The Body Shop website I picked my skincare set up for only £5 – bargain. I also got to pick a free sample of another moisturiser for spending over £5, I chose the Aloe Soothing Night Cream and so far, so good. It’s lovely and cooling, would be perfect for those days when your skin might have got a little bit burnt.

For make-up when it’s very hot and humid I like to use minimal products, my skin is quite blemish-prone though so I can’t go completely make-up free. I have been using the Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturiser in the shade Fair for years now, and imagine my surprise when I found it in Poundland for only £1 the other day! I normally only pay around £5 for a bottle off of eBay but £1 was such a bargain. I love this tinted moisturiser because it actually has really great coverage and the shade is pale enough for me, it has quite a dewy finish too which is nice for summer – makes you look more healthy.

I keep other products quite minimal, a swipe of waterproof mascara on my lashes, Natural Collection’s offering is my favourite – it’s only £1.99 and is quite lengthening, it stays on well, even when it’s very warm. To add a bit of colour to my cheeks I use a bronzer, the only bronzer I’ve found that is pale enough for me is also by The Body Shop, the Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder in Shade 1 Light Matte. This is normally quite pricey but with the discount it was only £6.50. To complete my summer face I like to pop on a bright lip colour, my favourites of this summer have been the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains as they are moisturising and last ages on the lips (they also taste nice!), as they’re a new product they’ve been on offer in Boots for only £5.99, a saving of £2. For days when I don’t fancy bright orange lips I also love using Carmex lip balm, the cherry flavour is a particular favourite of mine. I bought this from Savers for £1.25, so much cheaper than in Boots/Superdrug.

To keep my make-up looking fresh throughout the day I like to keep a refreshing toning spray to hand, my favourite at the moment is the Boots Botanics Rosewater Toning Spritz (reviewed here) as it does a great job at cooling down your face and also helps to make your make-up look a bit better when it’s been on a while. This product is also on offer in Boots at the moment, 1/3 off making it cost only £3.33.

The total for my must-have face products is:

Seaweed Skincare Kit – £5 + Stila Tinted Moisturiser - £1 + Natural Collection W/Proof Mascara - £1.99 + Revlon Kissable Balm Stain - £5.99 + Botanics Toning Spritz - £3.33 + Bronzer - £6.50 + Carmex - £1.25 = £25.06

For me, one of the most important factors in a summer body product is scent. I love to smell nice in summer (and winter, obviously…) but I associate certain smells with summer, coconut being the main one for me. Therefore I always purchase a coconut scented body butter and shower gel, I’ve tried lots of different brands but nothing beats The Body Shop Coconut range – the products smell like Pina Colada’s! Again, I usually purchase the gift set as it works out as better value for me seeing as I only use it for a couple of months. This cost me £5 again using the discount on the website over the weekend.

As I’m so pale I have to use a high factor (50!) sun protection as I tend to burn really easily, so I normally opt for the children’s versions as I always think that they must have lots of benefits and extra protection in them. I’ve loved the Ambre Solaire Rapido Spray for a couple of years now, it’s in an aerosol can that you can use at any angle (great for doing your back, and backs of knees). I like that it’s quite a thin formulation and rubs in easily without a white-cast, I’ve also never been sunburned while wearing this. It’s pricey though, an RRP of £16ish but it’s totally worth it! I was lucky when I popped into Superdrug and browsed the clearance section to find a full-size bottle for only £1.99!

If you do happen to get sunburned I find that a product containing Aloe Vera is the best for soothing it, especially the gel formulas. Keep a bottle in the fridge during warm weather and it makes a lovely cooling, soothing treat when you get home. This one by Vaseline is new to me, but I’ve been loving it so far – it smells lovely and really cools down your body. This cost me £2.43 from Superdrug.

I don’t know about you but I hate being all sweaty and hot when it’s warm, especially if I’m out and about trying to enjoy myself – step in Dove Maximum Protection – This stuff is fab, lasts all day long and it smells really nice too. £5.30 well spent!

Onto the feet, with summer comes sandals and with sandals comes pain. So much pain. I’m sure I’m not the only one that battles with blisters on the first few wears of my new sandals, and to help combat that I discovered the joy that is blister plasters. They are amazing! These Scholl ones are brilliant, they kind of fuse to your skin to create a barrier against rubbing shoes! I picked these up for £1.99 and they live in my bag for any shoe-related emergencies (these happen often in my life…).

To really treat my feet I like to soak them and then whack a thick layer of moisturiser on, this Intensive Foot Rescue from The Body Shop is perfect – it smells nice and minty and is really moisturising.  The RRP is £9.00 but with the discount it was only £4.50.

And once I’m all moisturised and nice smelling I like to paint my nails, I’ve always loved Barry M Nail Polish – only £2.99 and such a vast array of colours.

Total for the body:

TBS Coconut Gift Set - £5 + TBS Foot Cream - £4.50 + Nail Polish - £2.99 + Sun Cream - £1.99 + Aloe Vera Gel - £2.43 + Dove Deodorant - £5.30 + Blister Plasters - £1.99 = £24.20

Humidity is not my hair’s friend, hello frizz. The L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil is great for smoothing out my hair once it’s been washed, it’s also good to pop on your ends throughout the day. This was on offer in Superdrug at £6.99. I embrace my curls year round but in summer I like to go for a more beachy, wavy look with my hair for the most part, salt sprays are brilliant for achieving this. I’ve tried lots of salt sprays before, but my new favourite is this one by L’Oreal – it doesn’t make your hair too crispy! Only cost me £2.79 from Savers too!

When washing my hair in summer I like to add as much moisture in as possible, so shampoos which promise this are my faves. I’ve been using the ‘blue’ Herbal Essences shampoo for years now, it smells amazing (like coconut) and does a really good job at adding moisture to your locks – this big bottle was on offer for £1.69 in Superdrug. For conditioner I swear by using intensive treatments, my hair gets so tangly – this Coconut and Sweet Almond one smells amazing and really makes my hair manageable – the scent lingers around for ages too. Bargain at only £1.49 from Superdrug.

Total for hair:

Hair Oil - £6.99 + Salt Spray - £2.79 + Shampoo - £1.69 + Conditioner - £1.49 = £12.96

My biggest summer must-have is water, lots and lots of water. Keeping hydrated is really important for your health and also for the way that your skin looks! I bought this water bottle with a filter for £7.45 so that I can drink tap water without the horrible taste. It’s really encouraged me to drink more water and I’ve been feeling so much better when I do.
