Blogmas Day 20: Supporting Independent Retailers–Queens Hairdressing Rothwell

A couple of weeks ago Barclaycard contacted me regarding their new Freedom Rewards card, this is just like a regular rewards card except that you earn points wherever you spend money rather than just in certain stores. It also rewards every single purchase, no matter what the value – you can also earn double and triple points at some major retailers. Sounds great doesn’t it?

Barclaycard are championing independent retailers with the Freedom Rewards card, and sent me a £50 voucher for a local shop of my choice. I chose my local hairdressers, Queens, as I’ve always wanted to try it out there and never have before. I thought it would be good to support an independent salon in my home town as it’s nice to support home-grown talent rather than huge chains. I usually get my hair done by a mobile hair dresser in my Mum’s kitchen so going to a fancy salon was a proper treat for me! I chose to spend my voucher on a Cut & Finish by the Young Stylist in the Salon, Morgan – I wasn’t really sure what to expect but it really was a fab experience. I had a consultation before having my hair washed, blow dried, cut and styled and everything was perfect. I was in the salon just under an hour and it was a brilliant way to wind down after a busy day at work. I still have some money left on my voucher and I’m planning to treat myself to a cut in a couple of months too. You can’t really see in the picture as the light is so poor at the moment, but my hair was so shiny and sleek. I had a tiny bit off the ends and few layers put in around the face, I’ve also now got a bit of a side fringe too (I will update this post with a better image once I get one).

I would really recommend checking out your local independent salons as the service I experienced at Queens was impeccable, and I assume it would be similar in your local hairdressers too. It’s really nice to support smaller businesses and I’m sure that they appreciate new customers too!

Would you rather go to an independent salon or a chain brand for a hair cut?

  1. I always prefer local salons! It took me years to be able to trust someone enough to cut my hair, and he's amazing. I like going in and being greeted like an old friend (Well, we kind of are - he's an old customer of mine!), having a cup of coffee and a catch up while he tries to talk me into doing more daft things with my hair ;) Also because of my trichotillomania I'm quite conscious of my bald spots, and he's such a sweetheart about it.

    Local owned businesses ftw!
