Blogmas Day 20: Supporting Independent Retailers–Queens Hairdressing Rothwell

015

021

A couple of weeks ago Barclaycard contacted me regarding their new Freedom Rewards card, this is just like a regular rewards card except that you earn points wherever you spend money rather than just in certain stores. It also rewards every single purchase, no matter what the value – you can also earn double and triple points at some major retailers. Sounds great doesn’t it?

Barclaycard are championing independent retailers with the Freedom Rewards card, and sent me a £50 voucher for a local shop of my choice. I chose my local hairdressers, Queens, as I’ve always wanted to try it out there and never have before. I thought it would be good to support an independent salon in my home town as it’s nice to support home-grown talent rather than huge chains. I usually get my hair done by a mobile hair dresser in my Mum’s kitchen so going to a fancy salon was a proper treat for me! I chose to spend my voucher on a Cut & Finish by the Young Stylist in the Salon, Morgan – I wasn’t really sure what to expect but it really was a fab experience. I had a consultation before having my hair washed, blow dried, cut and styled and everything was perfect. I was in the salon just under an hour and it was a brilliant way to wind down after a busy day at work. I still have some money left on my voucher and I’m planning to treat myself to a cut in a couple of months too. You can’t really see in the picture as the light is so poor at the moment, but my hair was so shiny and sleek. I had a tiny bit off the ends and few layers put in around the face, I’ve also now got a bit of a side fringe too (I will update this post with a better image once I get one).

I would really recommend checking out your local independent salons as the service I experienced at Queens was impeccable, and I assume it would be similar in your local hairdressers too. It’s really nice to support smaller businesses and I’m sure that they appreciate new customers too!

Would you rather go to an independent salon or a chain brand for a hair cut?

Oxford Street

I popped down to London last night and I spend quite a bit of time wandering around admiring all the Christmas lights. It was raining so I didn’t get a chance to head over to Covent Garden and see the Christmas tree but Oxford Street was looking fabulous. I really love Christmas lights, they make me feel all warm inside and excited for the big day!

Are you a Christmas lights fan?

Blogmas Day 16: Love Me Beauty Box December Reviews

024

Love Me Beauty – December Edition 2013*

A week ago I received my December Love Me Beauty box and over the past week I have been trying out each of the products. I have been really impressed with a few of the products this month and have really enjoyed using them. It’s this aspect that I love most about beauty boxes, as I get to try out products I would never usually be able to.

033

049

Lord & Berry Intensity Lipstick in Glazed Pink - £12

This lipstick isn’t typically a shade that I would go for, I’m not really a fan of nude lipsticks. I did enjoy wearing this though and it’s perfect for a work lip when I’m not in the mood for something more exciting. The formula is nice and it has a glossy finish which makes it easy to wear.

031

001

Headline Colours Nail Polish in Quicksand - £9

I really love this nail polish, it’s a deep brown-grey shade and is lovely for wearing to work. It has a hint of purple in there too, which you can see in some lights. I felt quite grown-up and classy when I was wearing this colour on my nails. The formula is amazing too, one coat and my nail was covered, it has a nice glossy finish too so no need for topcoat!

028

Rodial 5 Minute Facial Sample - £7

This facial mask was really amazing to use, it sets whilst it’s on the skin and makes everything feel nice and tight. Once you wash it off your skin feels very clean and rejuvenated. Any redness appears reduced and my skin feels a lot smoother. I will definitely be using this again and think I will keep an eye out in TK Maxx for a full size version.

041

053

Lord & Berry Kiss Proof Lip Liner in Romantica - £7.50

This lip liner is a gorgeous bubble gum pink shade with a hint of lilac, I think it will be perfect for summer worn under other lipsticks or on it’s own. It is VERY matte and drying so I would advise lots of lip balm underneath if you’re going to wear it alone. The staying power of this lip liner is amazing, I popped this on at around 1pm and it was still on when I had a bath at 9, I had also had a nap during this time and drank lots of water as I wasn’t feeling well.

037

S5 Vitality Mask Sample – Around £6 *A Love Me Beauty Exclusive*

I’ve only used this once and I don’t think it’s enough time for it to have worked effectively as I didn’t see any real changes in my skin after using this. My skin felt soft and fresh and I think with more use it would make a difference in the texture of my face.

Have you tried out any of these products?

Blogmas Day 15: Christmas Party Make-up

Christmas-Party-Makeup

Christmas Party Make-up – December 2013

I’ve been to two Christmas parties this year and this is the make-up that I’ve worn to both of them, the first was a meal out with my boyfriend and his colleagues and the second was a 1940s night at a local tea room with my old workplace. I went for quite a fresh look with the skin, using Revlon’s Nearly Naked foundation and a little Benefit High Beam along the cheekbones. On the cheeks I’m wearing a touch of Benefit’s Dandelion blush, but not too much. The eyes are MAC’s Paint Pot in Painterly and winged liner using the L’Oreal Superliner, on my lashes is Barry M Lash Vegas mascara. My eyebrows are the Maybelline liner and mascara featured in this post. My lips are NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, this is my new favourite lipstick – beautifully matte and a rich blue toned red shade.

P.S. My brows don’t look as orange in real life.

Have you been to any Christmas parties this year?

Blogmas Day 14: Work Nails

Capsule Nail Wardrobe - Work 2

Capsule Nail Wardrobe - Work

Capsule Nail Wardrobe: Work

As I’ve mentioned before I recently started a new job and now work in a more professional atmosphere, this means that even my nails have to look the part. No bright colours or glitter. Super boring, eh? I thought I’d put together a little capsule nail wardrobe of work appropriate nail colours for anyone else in a similar situation. Muted neutral tones and pastel shades are allowed so I’ve picked out five of my favourites.

Deborah Lippmann - Modern Love

Deborah Lippmann – Modern Love

Modern Love is a pink toned neutral greige shade, it looks perfect on my nails as it seems to warm my hands up a little bit. I’ve received compliments when I’ve worn this shade to work, the perfect neutral.

L'Oreal - You Are Worth It

L’Oreal Colour Riche – You Are Worth It

You Are Worth It is a lovely blue-toned grey shade, I love the way it looks on my nails. It’s more blue than grey and is perfect for cooler weather.

OPI - Mermaid's Tears

OPI – Mermaid’s Tears

Mermaid’s Tears is the perfect pastel turquoise shade, it’s quite muted and again there is a bit of grey in there to calm it down a little. It can appear quite bright in some lights but I’d still say it was work appropriate.

Barry M Nail Paint - Lychee

Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine – Lychee

Lychee is a true beige shade, almost like a sand colour, it’s a little too light for me but I do like it and I think it would look fab on others. It also looks amazing with a bit of glitter on top (at the weekends obviously…).

Revlon Scented Polish - Strawberry Cream

Revlon – Strawberry Cream

Strawberry Cream is one of my all time favourite nail polish shades, it’s a lovely creamsicle shade – pink but with peachy undertones. It’s fresh and bright without being too garish, it makes me happy when I see my fingers typing away with this on. It’s also scented and has a very subtle strawberry fragrance.

Which nail polishes do you wear for work?
